General

The K4305/K4315 series is designed to provide an ideal tool for commissioning and fault finding in universal multiplexors and digital transmissions equipment operating at data speeds ranging from 1.2 Kbps to 2 Mbps.

K4315 portable test set combines the advantages of a handheld tester and a stand-alone desktop with enhanced interface capabilities. The tester itself, K4305, is delivered with a robust carrying case which is very practical for field use.

The test set can be equipped with an additional printer for direct data documentation or stored in the generous memory which can store data for up to two weeks of continuous measurement depending on parameter settings.

The instruments are equipped with both balanced and unbalanced connectors for flexible use. In addition, the input circuitry is very sensitive, 43 dB, and has also a built-in square root of f automatic cable equalization.

The measured data can be treated and displayed according to G.821, G.826, or M2100 error performance evaluations. Features such as AUTOSTART and the ability to store preprogrammed setups gives even an inexperienced user quick access to advanced measurements. Additionally, the tester can be equipped with a software package which enables remote control through a PC in real time.

Mode of operation

The K4305/K4315 series is characterized by its easy-to-follow menu software. The basic measurement modes are divided into 6 different categories described below.

2-Mbps Monitoring

  • FAS; code, CRC4, and remote CRC4 error measurements
  • Alarm detection, AIS, RAI, NoSync, NoSign, etc.
  • Level and frequency measurements in 64-Kbps channels, audible presentation through built-in loudspeaker
  • Bit contents of FAS and NFAS words
  • Enhanced CAS monitor showing contents of all channels
  • G.821, G.826, and M2100 error performance evaluations built-in
  • Idle/Busy scan for all 30 channels using CAS bits
Drop/Insert

The K4315/K4305 series can handle the following interfaces for dropping and inserting data:

  • V.11, V.35: N × 64 Kbps
  • G.703: 64 Kbps
  • Analog (600 ohm impedance)
  • PRBS in user-defined channel

This mode gives the user enhanced possibilities to connect a variety of equipment on the 2-Mbps data stream. An important feature is the capability of using a channel as a talk channel for communication between instruments out in the field.

Drop/Repeat

The instrument is simply acting as a repeater which means that it regenerates the data without changing anything, not even the CRC4 code. Additionally, the user can drop signals from the bit stream as described above.

Mux/Demux Tests

This mode of operation is used in order to test multiplexers. The test can be performed both ways, either transmit 2 Mbps and receiving 64 Kbps or vice versa. The quality of multiplexing/demultiplexing is verified by monitoring the bit error rate in the 64-Kbps channel and the occurrence of different alarms.

Framed Generator

In this mode the instrument works mainly as a generator of the PCM signal. The generated signal may be manipulated in detail by the user during measurement. Different errors can be injected at a fixed ratio, burst, or single shots as described below.

Unframed Generator

In this mode the instrument works as generator and analyzer with selectable bit patterns. The following interfaces are met:

  • 64 Kbps: G.703
  • N × 64 Kbps: V.11; V.35
  • 1.2 to 1544 Kbps: V.11, V.35

In general, bit errors and delays are measured.

Delayed Start of Measurement (Settling Time)

The measurement (timing and display of results) is delayed with this setting after the transmitter is activated. The advantage of this is that the item under test has settled in a stable state at the start of measurement and the measurement results have stabilized.

Settable delay: 1 to 10 s in 1-s steps.
